The Cruise Interpreter
Academy™
offers specialized training from embarkation to disembarkation. Before the Academy, there were no industry standards outside the Code of Professional Conduct to guide interpreters serving the Deaf Community during their cruise vacations.
In the Academy, participants undergo intensive and practical training to learn cruise line policy, procedures, and elite customer service etiquette skills to all stakeholders. The training includes participants applying what they've learned via role-playing from Deaf guests onboard the cruise ship invited to participate on Leadership training day.

Your Cruise Interpreter Academy™ training is designed to help the WHOLE interpreter and ensures that participants will get in touch with their authentic self and align that with interpreting. In the interpreting field (and also through interactions with the Deaf community,) there are opportunities as well as challenges as they occur, to work together for the effectiveness of the common goal. When interpreting, the common goal is to facilitate language and cultural mediation effectively.
This power, privilege and oppression session of the academy cover topics including:
Find what you can authentically contribute to the field of sign language interpreting. After all, the interpreting profession is “Authentically Yours,” not just a job.
Put your stamp on your work, and let your work speak your character. When you are authentically recognized for who you are, beyond your skills and knowledge; ethically you have succeeded in bringing the true purpose of becoming a sign language interpreter to light in a field that can be competitive, stressful, or challenging. However, sign language interpreters are a valuable asset to the Deaf community, and vice versa. The ability to achieve effective collaboration (between deaf individuals and ASL interpreters) is one that starts by understanding your role and the benefits of your contribution to the interpreting profession. Bring your best efforts to this workshop and be prepared to “Stay Authentic.”
